The context
Dhahab International Forex Bureau is a Bank of Uganda–licensed bureau inside Voice Mall, Bwebajja. As well as buying and selling currency, the counter handles Western Union and MoneyGram transfers, agency banking for 19 banks, and MTN and Airtel mobile money. Most visitors are on a phone and want two answers before they make the trip: what's today's rate, and can the branch handle my transaction?
What I built
- A public site with a rate board, a page for each service, opening hours, directions, a compliance page and an FAQ.
- A converter next to the rate board: enter an amount you have or need and it shows roughly what you would receive in shillings.
- An admin dashboard backed by Cloudflare D1, where staff publish the day's buy and sell rates without touching code.
- Call and WhatsApp links on every page, plus a bar pinned to the bottom of the screen on phones with Rates, Call and WhatsApp.
Decisions
Rates come first
Today's rate is the main reason people visit, so the rate board sits on the homepage and has its own page. Prices are shown in Uganda shillings, split into what the bureau buys at and what it sells at.
The bureau updates its own rates
Rates change every day. Rather than have staff message me each morning, I built a small admin dashboard on Cloudflare D1. They enter the new figures and the site shows them straight away.
Trust before anything else
People are bringing cash, so the Bank of Uganda licence, the compliance page and real photos of the staff and the branch are all visible early. There are no stock photos on the site.
Phone and WhatsApp instead of forms
Customers here would rather call or send a message than fill in a form. Every page ends with a call or WhatsApp link, and a short "What to bring" section (ID, transfer reference, account details) saves people a wasted trip.
